One of my goals this year was to switch to some more green or healthy alternatives. We stopped cooking and reheating food in plastic years ago, but chemicals can still seep into food that is stored in or made with plastic. Every time I saw my husband drinking from the old plastic cups I purchased in college, or plastic cooking utensils sitting in hot food or getting partially melted from a pan or the stove I cringed. I was worried about how it was affecting me and my family.

BPA awareness didn’t really start until around 2008 and all of my plastic kitchenware was purchased prior, so it likely contained BPA. BPA exposure is a concern because it disrupts the endocrine system, which produces hormones, by mimicking the female hormone estrogen and can trigger major changes in the body. The FDA expressed possible concerns about potential health effects on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children.

But BPA is just one of many chemicals used to make plastic; one that has been tested. So instead of replacing old plastics with new BPA free, but still potentially harmful cookware, I went a different route. I can’t trust the FDA make a determination on what is safe for me and my family.

When figuring out what to buy I looked for glass or high quality stainless steel alternatives that were similar in size to what I owned in plastic so I wouldn’t miss it. I was able to find and purchase everything through Amazon; thanks to my family for all the Amazon gift cards! Here is what I found:
